Connecting with Radegast

The Radegast Metaverse Client is a text-based, lightweight viewer for OpenSimulator. It is the officially recommended viewer for Holoneon users who utilize screen readers (like JAWS or NVDA) or for those who require a low-bandwidth connection.

Radegast does not render 3D graphics, but provides full access to chat, inventory, and movement.

Step 1: Download and Install

Download the latest version of the client from the Radegast Website.
Run the installer. If you are using a screen reader, the installation wizard is standard and accessible.

Step 2: Configure the Grid Connection

Note: If you have never connected to Holoneon before, you must add it to the Grid Manager manually.

Open Radegast.
In the login area, Change Grid to Custom
Login URI: http://hg.holoneon.com:80/

Step 3: Logging In

On the main Radegast screen, locate the "Grid" dropdown menu and select Holoneon.
Enter your First Name, Last Name, and Password.
Click the "Login" button.
Once connected, you will hear a confirmation sound (if audio is enabled) and see the local chat stream appear in the main window.

Essential Accessibility Tips

Text-to-Speech (TTS): Radegast has built-in TTS support. Go to File > Preferences > Speech to configure which chat messages and object names are read aloud to you.
Movement: You can use the chat command console to move if arrow keys are difficult. Type turn left, walk, or stop directly into the console.
Nearby Objects: To see what is around you without 3D graphics, go to the "World" menu and select "Objects". This will list all nearby objects. You can interact with them (sit, touch) by right-clicking their names in this list.

Running Radegast on GNU/Linux

These instructions are for Debian 13, and may differ on your distrobution. If you need help, Contact Us

Note: dotnet build on Linux creates a Windows-compatible .exe (the app host), but Wine itself does not come with the modern .NET 8 Runtime installed by default. If Radegast crashes on launch, you likely need to install the Windows version of the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime inside your Wine prefix.

Prerequisites

Before building, ensure your Debian system has the necessary tools installed.

.NET 8 SDK (Linux Version): Required to compile the code.

Tip: If the application crashes immediately, download the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime (Windows x64 installer) and install it inside Wine using: wine windowsdesktop-runtime-8.0.x-win-x64.exe

You may also have luck compiling it for the older .NET Framework 4.8 and use the Mono runtime (sudo apt install mono-complete), which does have a Linux implementation of WinForms, and should run natively without wine (untested by Holoneon staff)

Building and Running Radegast

1. Download and Extract

Download the source archive and unpack it.

tar xf radegast-2.50.tar.gz

2. Restore Dependencies

Move into the directory and download the required nuget packages.

cd radegast-2.50/
dotnet restore

3. Build the Project

Compile the Release version of the client.

dotnet build -c Release

4. Run with Wine

Navigate to the build output directory. Note that modern .NET builds usually create a subfolder for the framework version (e.g., net8.0-windows or net8.0). If those directory paths do not exist, check bin/Release for the Ragegast.exe file.

cd bin/Release/net8.0-windows/
wine Radegast.exe
